KAMPALA, Uganda – New Al Merriekh SC Bentiu winger Jonathan Gem has enjoyed a dream start to life at the South Sudan champions, scoring in consecutive pre-season victories during the club's training camp in Uganda.
The former Atlabara FC winger netted the decisive goal as Al Merriekh came from behind to defeat Uganda Premier League side UPPC FC 2-1, continuing his impressive early form with the Bentiu-based club.
Gem had also found the back of the net in Al Merriekh's emphatic 5-0 victory over Kibuli FC, making it two goals in two successive outings.
Speaking after his recent performances, Gem said the goals have boosted his confidence but stressed that the focus remains on preparing for the new season.
"I'm honoured to join El Mariekh Bentiu. Scoring helps my confidence a lot, and it means I'm settling in with the boys well. But I know pre-season is just preparation, and I'm focused on learning."
The winger also acknowledged the role of his former club in shaping his career.
"I have huge respect for Atlabara. They developed me, and I'll always be thankful. But El Mariekh showed me a clear plan."
Gem's early impact has been one of the major positives from Al Merriekh's pre-season tour, with the South Sudan champions looking increasingly ready for the 2026/27 campaign after a series of encouraging performances in Uganda.
