JUBA, South Sudan — Salam FC may have suffered a 4–0 defeat to Yei Joint Stars in Week 2 of the South Sudan Women’s Premier League, but very young goalkeeper Anyang Manyang emerged as one of the encouraging performers of the afternoon.
At Bulluk Playground in Juba, Manyang was repeatedly called upon to protect the Salam goal, producing several important saves to deny clear goal-scoring opportunities.
Despite her young age, the goalkeeper showed confidence in difficult situations. Her height gave her an advantage when dealing with aerial balls, while her communication with the defenders around her was another noticeable part of her performance.
The result was a difficult one for Salam, but Manyang’s individual display offered a glimpse of a goalkeeper with qualities that could be developed over time.
At this stage of her career, the right coaching and consistent competitive experience could be particularly important. Working with a specialised goalkeeping coach could help Manyang refine her positioning, handling, distribution, decision-making and technique when facing shots from distance.
For South Sudan’s women’s football, continuing to identify and develop young goalkeepers can help build a deeper pool of talent for the future. Manyang’s height, aerial ability and willingness to communicate provide a useful foundation, but patience and structured development will be essential.
If she continues to perform consistently and makes steady progress, Manyang could eventually come into consideration for national-team opportunities.
For now, her immediate task is development — learning, gaining experience and building consistency with every match.
After one difficult result, there was still a positive story to take from Salam FC’s goal: a very young goalkeeper showing why she could be one to watch as the Women’s Premier League develops.
