South Sudan Drawn with Mali, Chad and Côte d'Ivoire in Historic AFCON Minifootball Debut

Guinea - South Sudan has taken a historic step in the development of minifootball after officially participating for the first time in the African Minifootball Confederation (AMC) General Assembly and the draw for the 2027 African Minifootball Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The landmark event officially welcomed South Sudan into Africa's growing minifootball community and confirmed the country's participation in the continental championship, which will be hosted by Guinea in 2027.

During the official draw, South Sudan was placed in Group D alongside Mali, Chad and Côte d'Ivoire. The tournament will feature 24 teams divided into six groups of four.

The President of the South Sudan Minifootball Federation, Victor Lawrence Lual, described the occasion as a defining moment for the sport in the country, saying the federation's attention now turns to building a competitive national team capable of representing South Sudan on the continental stage.

"Today marks a proud chapter in the history of South Sudanese sport. This is more than our first participation in the AMC General Assembly—it is the beginning of South Sudan's journey on the continental minifootball stage. We are honoured to join Africa's minifootball family, and our focus now shifts to preparing a competitive national team for AFCON Guinea 2027."

Lual expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the South Sudan National Olympic Committee, the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), sports administrators and partners who supported the federation's efforts to secure international recognition.

He also called on government institutions, the private sector, development partners and sponsors to invest in the growth of minifootball, saying their support would be vital in preparing the national team and creating opportunities for young South Sudanese athletes.

South Sudan's participation in the 2027 African Minifootball Cup of Nations marks the country's first appearance in a major continental minifootball competition and another milestone in the expansion of international sport in the world's youngest nation.
