JUBA, South Sudan – South Sudan Minifootball Federation President Victor Lawrence Lual has described the country's Group D draw at the African Minifootball Cup of Nations as a major challenge but believes it also presents a historic opportunity for the nation's first appearance in the continental competition.
In an exclusive interview with Sports Hunter South Sudan, Lawrence said South Sudan respects the quality and experience of its opponents but remains determined to make a positive impression on its tournament debut.
"It is certainly a very tough group. We have been drawn alongside strong and experienced teams. Chad and Côte d'Ivoire have both previously participated in the Minifootball World Cup, in 2025 and 2017 respectively, while Mali is also a highly competitive side with a strong football tradition," Lawrence said.
South Sudan has been drawn alongside Mali, Chad and Côte d'Ivoire in Group D, with the tournament set to mark the country's first-ever participation in the African Minifootball Cup of Nations.
Despite acknowledging the challenge ahead, Lawrence said the federation views the competition as an important milestone in the development of minifootball in South Sudan.
"For South Sudan, this will be our first-ever appearance at the African Minifootball Cup of Nations, so we fully respect the quality of our opponents. At the same time, we see this as a historic opportunity to learn, gain valuable international experience and showcase our country's potential on the continental stage."
The federation president added that preparations will now intensify as South Sudan aims to be competitive in its historic debut.
"Every journey begins with a first step, and we are proud to take that step. We will prepare well, compete with determination and represent South Sudan with pride. We look forward to an exciting tournament and to the continued growth of minifootball in our country.
The draw marks another significant milestone for South Sudan's growing presence in international minifootball as the federation prepares for its first continental campaign.
