Yei Joint Stars began the inaugural South Sudan Women’s Premier League in emphatic fashion, defeating newly established Juba Queens 4-1 at Juba National Stadium on Saturday evening.
Already established as the reigning South Sudan Cup women’s champions, the Super Queens carried that winning pedigree into the country’s new top-flight women’s league — and produced a performance full of attacking intent.
Spencer Nakacwa set the tone in the 20th minute, breaking the deadlock with a composed finish to put Yei Joint Stars ahead. The winger continued to cause problems for the Juba Queens defence, creating several opportunities before the break as the Super Queens carried their 1-0 advantage into half-time.
Juba Queens responded after the restart and were rewarded in the 51st minute. Ababiki Lilian pressed Yei Joint Stars goalkeeper Nawal Isaac, intercepted the ball following a goalkeeping error and finished into an unguarded net to bring the newly formed side level.
But the cup champions quickly restored their advantage.
Substitute Aluka Grace stepped up in the 79th minute and unleashed a long-range free-kick that goalkeeper Mercy Sharon was unable to hold, putting Yei Joint Stars back in front.
The Super Queens then took control of the closing stages. Mary Anger made it 3-1 in the 86th minute with a close-range finish after being set up by Nakacwa, before Grace completed her brace moments later.
The substitute capitalized on another mistake outside the box, intercepting a pass from the Juba Queens goalkeeper before finding the empty net to complete a 4-1 victory.
It was a statement opening from Coach Sony Harriet’s Yei Joint Stars, who move to the top of the early standings.
For Rina Thomas’s Juba Queens, the result came on a historic night as the recently established club made its first competitive appearance.
