Juba, South Sudan - Sudan began their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Ethiopia at Juba National Stadium in South Sudan.

The Group J encounter looked destined to end without a goal after Ethiopia missed several promising opportunities, with Sudan also struggling to find a breakthrough in a tightly contested match.

The decisive moment came in the closing stages when Yasir Mozamil was brought down inside the Ethiopia penalty area, resulting in a penalty for Sudan.

Mohamed Eisa stepped up and converted from the spot to put Sudan ahead and ultimately secure a 1-0 victory.

Ethiopia had created several clear chances earlier in the match but were unable to find the finishing touch. Sudan, meanwhile, showed patience before making their opportunity count late in the game.

The victory gives Sudan three points from their opening AFCON 2027 qualifier and puts them at the top of Group J, following Senegal’s 1-1 draw with Mozambique.

The result gives Sudan an important early advantage in the race to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, while Ethiopia will need to respond in their next Group J fixture.
