JUBA - South Sudan Premier League side Olympic FC have officially entered a new chapter after appointing Coach John Garang Manyok Mian as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

The club confirmed Garang’s appointment through its official Facebook page, and in an exclusive interview with Sports Hunter South Sudan, Olympic FC Secretary Benasio Augustino provided further details about the decision, the coach’s contract, plans for the technical bench and the club’s long-term project.

Garang, a CAF B Diploma holder, founder of Al Amal Football Academy, and former assistant coach of the South Sudan U-15 National Team, joins Olympic FC with experience in player development and domestic football. Before his appointment, he served as head coach of City FC, a Juba Football Association Second Division side, and previously worked as an assistant coach to Nichola Peter at Munuki SC.

Garang to Assemble His Technical Team

Benasio revealed that the newly appointed head coach will be responsible for selecting his technical staff, which will include an assistant coach, fitness coach and goalkeeper coach.

“He will be the one to bring his technical team, assistant coach, fitness coach and goalkeeper coach. We confirmed him yesterday as the head coach, and soon he will bring his technical bench,” Benansio said.

The Olympic FC secretary explained that details of the coach’s financial package will remain confidential until the full technical team is completed.

“The financial details of the contract we decided to keep confidential because some parties of the technical bench have not yet been brought in. When everything is complete, with the four or five members of the technical team, we will provide the details,” he added.

According to Benasio, Coach Garang is expected to finalize his technical bench in the coming days, after which the club will organise an official introduction involving the technical team, players and board of directors.

Why Olympic FC Chose Coach Garang

The appointment follows the club’s decision not to renew the contract of former head coach Mongdeng Atet, who guided Olympic FC during the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 seasons.

Benasio praised Mongdeng’s contribution, insisting that the decision was not based on technical performance issues but rather on unsuccessful contract negotiations.

“Coach Mongdeng worked for two seasons, 2024/2025 and 2025/2026, and during those two seasons there were no technical issues. The only challenge was the details of his new contract. We did not succeed in agreeing on the amount he requested because the club is coming from county football to Renk Football Association, and the financial situation for clubs from the states is difficult,” he explained.

After reviewing available options, the club settled on Garang as the right candidate to lead its next phase of development.

“Coach Garang is a son of Olympic. As a player, he played for Olympic in 2007/2008 during the promotion playoff for the Sudan Premier League,” Benansio said.

The club believes Garang’s background in youth development will be a major advantage as Olympic FC look to build for the future.

“Since he has relations with Al Amal Football Academy and he is the head coach of Al Amal, it will help the team a lot because he has good relations with different academies. We will benefit from the rising young stars. That is why we chose Coach Garang,” he added.

Olympic FC Focus on Building Before Titles

As preparations begin for the 2026/2027 South Sudan Premier League season, Olympic FC says its immediate priority is creating a stable foundation before targeting major honours.

Benasio said the club understands that challenging for championships requires time, planning and financial strength.

“Until now, the team is in a period of complete stability in the capital Juba. To reach the stage of championships requires a lot of work and financial ability. We are working on building the team during this period, and when the team reaches the level of stability, then we will think about competing for championships,” he said.

With Coach Garang now at the helm, Olympic FC are set to begin preparations for the new campaign, with a focus on squad development, youth integration and building a competitive team capable of achieving future success.
