RABAT, MOROCCO | 7 NOVEMBER 2026

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will take on Japan in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 on Saturday, with history within their reach.

The West Africans became the first African nation to reach the tournament’s final after producing an impressive 3–1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final.

Queen Joseph opened the scoring before substitute Awawu Bashiru delivered a match-winning performance, scoring twice to send Nigeria into the historic final.

Japan secured their place after a dramatic semi-final encounter against defending champions DPR Korea. Following a 1–1 draw, the Japanese side prevailed 4–1 in the penalty shootout.

The final is scheduled for 18:30 local time in Rabat (20:30 Juba time) at the Mohammed VI Football Complex.

A closer look at the finalists

According to FIFA’s statistical preview published on 5 November, Japan and Nigeria arrive at the final with impressive tournament records.

Japan have scored 150 goals across their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup history, making them the competition’s all-time leading scorers.

They have conceded just twice on their journey to the final.

The Japanese side will also be appearing in their fourth final, having previously reached the showpiece matches in 2010, 2014 and 2016. Their only title came in 2014, when they defeated Spain 2–0.

Nigeria, meanwhile, have registered 113 attempts on goal during Morocco 2026, the second-highest total in the competition behind DPR Korea’s 186.

The Flamingos have also demonstrated impressive attacking depth, with eight different players finding the net during the tournament.

Awawu Bashiru is among the players attracting attention after scoring twice against Brazil. Interestingly, she had played just 73 minutes in the tournament before the semi-final, with all her previous appearances coming from the bench.

Nigeria seek to overcome opening-match setback

Nigeria’s journey to the final has been particularly remarkable.

The Flamingos began their campaign with a 2–1 defeat against Poland but responded with five consecutive victories to reach the final.

They now have an opportunity to become the first team to lose their opening match of the competition and go on to lift the trophy.

Both finalists have won five consecutive matches since their respective opening setbacks, underlining their determination and consistency throughout the tournament.

Africa awaits history

For Nigeria, Saturday’s encounter is more than a championship match. It is an opportunity to establish a new milestone for African women’s youth football.

Japan, however, bring considerable tournament experience and will be determined to secure their second title.

With two technically strong teams meeting in Rabat, the final promises an exciting conclusion to Morocco 2026.

Can Nigeria’s Flamingos overcome Japan and bring the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy to Africa for the first time?
