Yei Joint Stars president Eng. Lemi William says the South Sudan Women’s Champions must break their long-standing group-stage barrier when they travel to Rwanda for the CECAFA tournament.
Yei Joint Stars have participated in the regional competition five times but have never progressed beyond the group stage.
That history has motivated the club’s leadership to set a different objective for this year’s campaign.
“Our target this year is we need to reach the final,” Lemi told Sports Hunter South Sudan.
The president said the club has worked to strengthen its technical and administrative structures in an effort to give the players the tools required to compete against the region’s best teams.
“We have decided to put in the right people, to give the girls the skills that are needed,” he said.
Lemi believes the current squad has the potential to achieve something beyond what Yei Joint Stars have managed in previous editions.
“Based on what I’ve seen, what they are doing, they may go beyond what we used to see,” he added.
The team’s 10-1 defeat to FSFA U17 in their latest preseason friendly highlighted areas that need improvement, but the club's leadership remains focused on the bigger objective.
Yei Joint Stars will now enter the final stage of preparations with the ambition of reaching the CECAFA final for the first time.
