Group A champions Gor Mahia FC have been dealt a major injury setback ahead of their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup semi-final against Sudan's Al Hilal SC after three key players were ruled out with injuries.

The biggest concern is winger Samuel Kapen, who suffered a complete anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear during Gor Mahia's final Group A match against Garde Républicaine of Djibouti. 

The injury is expected to keep him out of action for between six months and one year.

The Kenyan champions have also lost forward Patrick Essombe, who has been diagnosed with a torn ligament and is expected to spend two months on the sidelines. 

Essombe enjoyed an impressive group-stage campaign, scoring a stunning goal against APR and providing a crucial assist in Gor Mahia's final group match.

Defender Sylvester Owino has also been ruled out after suffering a right calf sprain. He is expected to miss the next two months as he begins his rehabilitation.

The injuries represent a significant setback for Gor Mahia, who topped Group A on goal difference after finishing level on six points with APR and Vipers. The Kenyan champions scored six goals and conceded just once during the group stage to secure their place in the semi-finals.

Gor Mahia are scheduled to face Al Hilal SC on 4 August in the CECAFA Kagame Cup semi-finals, with the winner advancing to the tournament's final. 

The absence of three important first-team players will force the technical bench to rethink its plans for the crucial knockout encounter. The club confirmed that its medical team is closely monitoring the trio and will oversee their treatment and rehabilitation as they begin their recovery.
