The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major increase in prize money for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The winner of the tournament will now receive USD 2 million, representing a 100% increase from the previous prize.
CAF also announced that the total prize money for the competition has increased by 67%, rising from USD 3.475 million to USD 5.8 million.
The runner-up prize has increased by 50% to USD 750,000, while the third-place prize has also been increased.
Each of the 16 participating women’s national teams will receive USD 150,000 in participation funding, an increase from the previous USD 125,000.
CAF highlighted that since the current leadership took office, the WAFCON winner’s prize money has increased from USD 200,000 to USD 2 million, representing a 900% rise.
The increase comes as CAF continues efforts to expand and strengthen women’s football across the continent, including increasing the number of participating teams from eight to 16.
