Algeria opened their TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2026 campaign with a deserved 2-0 victory over Senegal in their Group A opener on Sunday.
The North Africans broke the deadlock three minutes before the break when Marin Davor calmly converted a penalty in the 42nd minute, giving Algeria a crucial advantage heading into half-time.
Senegal pushed for an equaliser after the restart but struggled to break down Algeria's organised defence. Algeria then sealed the win in the 88th minute through Melissa Betahya, who found the back of the net to secure all three points.
The victory sends Algeria to the top of Group A with three points, while Senegal begin their campaign without a point and will look to bounce back in their next fixture
Group A also features hosts Morocco and Kenya, who were set to face each other later on Sunday as the race for the quarter-finals gets underway.
The result gives Algeria an early advantage in what is expected to be a highly competitive group as they continue their quest for a place in the knockout stage of Africa's premier women's football tournament.
