JUBA – Juba Football Association First Division side Zal Zal FC have appointed Charles Cesar as their new head coach on a four-year contract ahead of the 2026/27 season, with the club placing its faith in the highly-rated tactician to lead a long-term rebuilding project.

Cesar joins Zal Zal from Atlabara FC, where he served as fitness coach under Bilal Felix, while also maintaining his role as a coach at Future Stars Football Academy (FSFA).

The appointment marks Cesar's return to the Juba Football Association First Division touchline after an impressive spell with Viva Stars FC, where he was named the 2023/24 JFA First Division Coach of the Season. During that campaign, he guided the Fighters to a historic third-place finish—the highest league position in the club's history.

In an exclusive interview with Sports Hunter South Sudan, Zal Zal FC Secretary Yohana Kundu revealed that although the agreement runs for four years, the coach's performance will be assessed annually.

"On Friday, we signed a four-year agreement with Coach Charles Cesar. The contract will be reviewed every year, and if the performance is good, it will continue for the full four years," Kundu said.

The club insists the appointment is part of a wider vision aimed at building a sustainable and competitive team rather than chasing immediate silverware.

"Our main objective is to build this team for the next 10 to 15 years. We are not under pressure to win titles immediately. We want Coach Charles to build a strong foundation. If he wins the league or the cup, that will be an added bonus, but our priority is long-term development."

Performance-Based Agreement

While the financial details of the contract remain confidential at the request of both parties, Kundu confirmed that the agreement includes several performance-related clauses. Under the deal, Cesar will receive performance bonuses should Zal Zal win the league or a domestic cup, or if the team records 10 consecutive unbeaten matches in all competitions. 

However, the contract also contains a termination clause allowing the club to end the agreement should the team suffer five consecutive defeats. The newly appointed coach has also been given the responsibility of selecting his own assistant coach as he assembles his technical staff ahead of the new campaign.

Major Rebuilding Task

Cesar arrives at a club looking to recover from one of its most difficult seasons in recent years. Zal Zal finished 13th in the 2025/26 Juba Football Association First Division standings, collecting 24 points from 28 matches after registering six wins, six draws and 16 defeats.

Defensively, the club endured the league's worst record, conceding 83 goals, while managing 38 goals at the opposite end. The former Viva Stars coach now faces the challenge of reshaping the squad and restoring competitiveness as the club looks to move away from the relegation battle.

Zal Zal have confirmed that pre-season preparations will commence immediately after the conclusion of the ongoing main transfer window, with Cesar expected to oversee recruitment and finalize his technical team before the start of the 2026/27 season.

For Cesar, the appointment represents an opportunity to reaffirm his reputation as one of South Sudan's brightest young coaches, while for Zal Zal FC, it signals the beginning of a long-term project built on stability, development and sustained progress.
