JUBA, South Sudan — A photograph of South Sudan national team doctor Kwaje collecting footballs after the Bright Stars’ 5–0 defeat to Egypt has raised a simple question about the responsibilities of support staff around the national team.

Kwaje was captured on the pitch at Juba National Stadium after the final whistle, gathering footballs as the stadium began to empty. While the moment may appear routine, collecting match balls is not part of a team doctor’s core medical role.

A national-team doctor is primarily responsible for player health and medical care — including injury assessment, treatment, medical emergencies, player welfare and coordination with other members of the medical team.

Matchday equipment and pitch-related duties are normally handled by other personnel within the team or competition structure. The image therefore offers an unusual glimpse into the working environment around the Bright Stars, where responsibilities can sometimes extend beyond an individual's designated professional role.

There is no indication from the photograph alone why Kwaje was collecting the balls, and the moment should not be interpreted as evidence of misconduct or poor medical practice.

Instead, it raises a broader question about role clarity and the organisation of matchday responsibilities within South Sudan’s national team setup.

For a national team operating on the international stage, clearly defined duties allow medical, technical, administrative and equipment personnel to concentrate on their respective responsibilities.

The photograph came after a difficult night for the Bright Stars, who suffered a 5–0 defeat to Egypt in their AFCON 2027 qualifying encounter in Juba.

But beyond the result, the image of the team doctor collecting footballs tells another story — one about the people working around the team and the tasks they perform when the cameras are still rolling.

The question is not why Kwaje helped collect the balls. The bigger question is: who was officially responsible for that duty?
