Juba - South Sudan U23 head coach Simon James has named a 55-player provisional squad ahead of the upcoming U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF) shared the squad through its official communication channels at midday on Friday, officially confirming the extensive selection as preparations for the qualifying campaign gather pace.

The squad is made up of six goalkeepers, 18 defenders, 12 midfielders and 19 attackers, giving James a wide pool of players to assess before the final squad is selected.

The provisional list brings together emerging talents from the South Sudan Premier League and South Sudanese players currently competing in leagues across East Africa.

Several of the players included in the U23 selection were also called up to the South Sudan U20 squad, reflecting the continued movement of young players through the country’s national-team development pathway.

A broad pool of emerging talent

The 55-player selection provides James and his technical staff with options across every position as they prepare for the U23 AFCON qualifying campaign.

Attackers make up the largest group with 19 players, followed by 18 defenders, while 12 midfielders and six goalkeepers complete the provisional squad.

The inclusion of both locally based players and overseas-based professionals also highlights the expanding pool of young South Sudanese footballers gaining experience across the region.

Focus turns to the qualifiers

With the provisional squad now confirmed, attention will turn to preparations and the eventual selection of the final group that will represent South Sudan in the U23

AFCON qualifiers.

The campaign will provide another important test for James’ side and an opportunity for a new generation of South Sudanese players to make their mark on the international stage.
