LILONGWE, MALAWI — South Sudan began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Malawi at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Friday.
The hosts took the lead in the 20th minute through Babatunde Adepoju, giving Malawi a narrow advantage going into the interval.
South Sudan responded shortly after the restart, with Joseph Dhata finding the equaliser in the 48th minute to bring the Bright Stars level.
The momentum, however, swung back in Malawi’s favour when Lloyd Njaliwa restored the hosts’ lead in the 64th minute, a goal that ultimately secured all three points for the Flames.
The result leaves South Sudan without a point after Matchday One in Group B, while the other group fixture between Egypt and Angola is being played later on Friday. CAF's official fixture list confirms that Egypt and Angola are the other two teams in Group B.
South Sudan will now turn their attention to their next Group B assignment, when they host Egypt on 29 September 2026.
The Bright Stars will be looking to respond on home soil and put their qualifying campaign back on track.
