Johannesburg, South Africa — 8 August 2026: The South African Football Association (SAFA) National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana.
Mosimane is set to return to the South African national team after SAFA’s NEC backed his appointment during an Extraordinary Meeting held at SAFA House in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The 61-year-old will replace Hugo Broos, who stepped down from the position earlier this week.
SAFA President Danny Jordaan confirmed that the NEC had approved Mosimane’s return, although some contractual matters still need to be finalised before the appointment is officially announced.
“The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,” Jordaan said.
Mosimane previously guided Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012 before going on to enjoy a highly successful club coaching career, including winning the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly.
His return comes after South Africa’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. Bafana Bafana qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time in their history after defeating South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey, with Thapelo Maseko scoring the decisive goal.
The appointment also comes as SAFA prepares for its Elective Congress, scheduled for 12 September 2026.
