JUBA, South Sudan — Christian Nsengi-Biembe’s competitive tenure as South Sudan senior national team head coach began with a 2–1 defeat to Malawi in Group B of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Malawi took the lead through Babatunde Adepoju in the 20th minute, before South Sudan responded shortly after the restart, with Joseph Dhata equalising in the 48th minute.

The hosts restored their advantage through Lloyd Njaliwa in the 64th minute, securing three points in the opening Group B fixture.

Nsengi-Biembe, who was appointed Bright Stars head coach in August, now turns his attention to his first home Group B match in charge.

The Bright Stars will host Egypt at Juba National Stadium on Tuesday, 29 September, with Egypt entering the fixture after a goalless draw against Angola in their opening Group B match.

The match will be Nsengi-Biembe’s next opportunity to continue shaping the Bright Stars as South Sudan begin their campaign in Group B.
