Singapore celebrated its first medal at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games after Ng Zhe Nin captured gold in the women's taijiquan combined event at the Dakar Expo Centre.

The 16-year-old delivered a memorable performance to fulfil a childhood ambition, adding Youth Olympic Games gold to her growing collection of international junior championship medals.

Ng revealed that winning a Youth Olympic medal had been one of her biggest ambitions since childhood, explaining that years of dedication and sacrifices at the training centre had kept her motivated.

"This was one of my goals since I was young," Ng said, reflecting on the achievement.

Meanwhile, three other athletes were crowned wushu champions as the competition concluded in Dakar.

China's Lin Yilei claimed gold in the men's changquan combined event after topping both preliminary competitions before finishing ahead of Indonesia's Asael Christo Jacob Rondonuwu and Iran's Arash Pahali.

Egypt also celebrated gold through Sondos Sonbol, who won the women's changquan combined title ahead of Venezuela's Valeria Frannerys Dudamel Alvarado and India's Lanchenbi Chanu Rajkumari.

In the men's taijiquan combined event, Hong Kong's Poon Hao Ran secured gold, with Vietnam's Khac Le Hoang Nguyen taking silver and Japan's Kawamura Shiki claiming bronze.

Poon's victory was particularly significant after overcoming training injuries, illness and difficulties adapting to the conditions in Dakar.

The wushu competition concluded with athletes, coaches and judges joining together for a spectacular group performance on the competition mat, receiving a standing ovation from spectators.

Ng's historic achievement gives Singapore an early breakthrough at Dakar 2026 and highlights the growing international profile of wushu among young athletes.
