JUBA, South Sudan — Midfielder Joseph Malis, also known as “Gonga,” has secured a place in South Sudan head coach N’Sengi-Biembe’s final squad for the Bright Stars’ AFCON 2027 qualifier against Malawi in Lilongwe.
Malis was added to the senior national team’s provisional squad after the initial 48-player list was expanded to 50 players, and has now made the final group that travelled to Malawi.
The midfielder had previously featured as an unused substitute for Jamus during the CECAFA tournament, but his recent performances in the South Sudan Premier League have strengthened his case for a place in the senior setup.
Playing for his club against Al Ghazala FC, Malis produced an impressive display, providing the assist for the winning goal scored by Jude Ssemugabi and contributing to the team’s third goal.
His latest form has earned him an opportunity at international level as N’Sengi-Biembe finalises his squad for the Bright Stars’ opening AFCON 2027 qualifying assignment.
Malis travel with the South Sudan delegation to Lilongwe, where the Bright Stars will face Malawi as they begin their campaign on the road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
For the midfielder, the call-up represents an opportunity to turn his recent club form into an impact on the international stage.
