Infantino Names Juba National Stadium Among Africa’s Most Special Football Venues

By: Sports Hunter South Sudan - FIFA President Gianni Infantino has praised Juba National Stadium as one of Africa’s football venues that holds a special place in his heart, highlighting the impact of FIFA investment in developing infrastructure across the continent.

Speaking about his favourite stadiums in Africa, Infantino mentioned iconic grounds such as Soccer City in Johannesburg and modern facilities in Morocco, before singling out stadiums in South Sudan and Mauritania for their special significance.

“I have to mention two stadiums, one in Mauritania and one in South Sudan, which are really close to my heart. They are not just beautiful; they are small, but they have been built, financed, completed with FIFA money,” Infantino said.

Juba National Stadium was officially inaugurated on 11 June 2026 when South Sudan hosted Sudan in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match, becoming the country’s first modern football venue capable of hosting international fixtures.

The historic project received nearly USD 7 million in support through FIFA Forward funding, helping transform the stadium into a key football landmark in South Sudan’s capital.

Through FIFA Forward 3.0, further improvements are planned, including support for the construction of South Sudan’s first national Technical Centre, aimed at strengthening player development, coaching and football administration in the world’s youngest country.

Infantino also highlighted FIFA-supported developments in Mauritania, including Stade Municipal de Nouadhibou, which received funding for a new artificial turf pitch inaugurated in 2021, and Sheikh Boidiya Stadium, which underwent major renovations featuring a synthetic playing surface and upgrades to dressing rooms and other facilities.

The FIFA President said the passion of African supporters remains the continent’s greatest football asset, praising the atmosphere created by fans across stadiums.

The recognition of Juba National Stadium comes as South Sudan continues its push to build a stronger football foundation and establish itself further on the international stage.
