JUBA, South Sudan — South Sudanese long-distance runner Atalena Napule Gaspore Loliha is set to return home from Nairobi today ahead of Saturday’s Watoto Juba City Marathon, in what the South Sudan Athletics Federation describes as a historic and deeply symbolic moment for the country’s sport.
Napule made history at the 13th African Games in Accra in 2023, winning South Sudan’s first-ever gold medal at the continental multi-sport event with a commanding half-marathon performance in 1:14:36.
Her landmark victory represented a major achievement for South Sudanese athletics, highlighting the determination, resilience and talent of the country’s long-distance runners.
The South Sudan Athletics Federation has welcomed her return to Juba, describing her homecoming and participation in the marathon as an important moment that can inspire a new generation of athletes.
Napule is now set to line up for the Watoto Juba City Marathon on Saturday, October 3, 2026, bringing her international experience back to the capital for the home event.
Ahead of the race, Napule said her motivation goes beyond competition, with representing her country and inspiring others remaining central to her sporting journey.
“I run through determination and dedication to represent my country internationally. I believe in using sports to inspire and transform lives. I am excited to announce that I will be participating in the Watoto Juba City Marathon.”
Her return to Juba is expected to generate considerable interest among athletics supporters, young runners and sports enthusiasts, particularly given the significance of her African Games achievement.
For aspiring athletes across South Sudan, Napule's journey from national competition to continental champion offers a powerful example of what determination and dedication can achieve.
Her presence at Saturday’s marathon therefore carries significance beyond the race itself, as she returns to compete on home soil and reconnect with the country whose name she made history representing.
The Watoto Juba City Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, in Juba.
